Today, is another beautiful weather day in Palmetto. I have been vacationing since Saturday, but get to stretch my chops a bit, in helping a family member with the dreaded Vista, printer drivers issue. Now, of course Windows 7 has been out now for over a year, but many people still have and use Vista for better or worse.
I feel for all of them, my father included. Vista also has been much improved through updates, and patches since the early days of this OS. So today, I venture "back in time" to see if I can help remedy a problem, and to get the HP Printer to simply PRINT!!!
It amazes me, how stupid I can be with my personal time. Vista was a bear with older printers, and this scenario was no different. As it turned out, we had a $39.00 HP printer in our condo that was ready to go, and after 3 hours of useless forum searching, and countless types of driver installs, cause Vista or 7 did not have a driver specific to this printer, there comes a time, when you gotta say, my time ( 3+ hrs) is worth more than this. And yes it is worth more than 12+ per hour at this point in my life.
Oh yeah, I am on vacation, but it also says something to making a point in troubleshooting, where you have to say, rather than using work arounds that have no future guarantees, and will likely have to revisit, why not just get the right thing, that works, and in this case was paid for and cheap? OK, OK, I know, but Kev,, whatabout the "you can do it" sprit! Never give up? Yeah, very true, but vacation ends in a few days, and this little chapter cannot rule it any longer. Arguably this was too much time spent, but I did learn something. There is a reason people don't bring in DVD PLAYERS in for repair anymore, and simply buy new ones. At a minimum of $50 or more per hour to repair, it makes much more sense to spend 29.99 at Best buy for a new one.
